Sweet and Sour Chutney

Sweet and Sour Chutney is so simple and can be made with in minutes with out much effort. This chutney or Pachadi or side dish tastes superb  and makes perfect combination for paddu , dosa  and paratha too. Sweet and Sour Chutney is quick and tasty recipe prepared with  using very nutritious yellow pumpkin and raw mango  which gives sweetness and sourness to the chutney.

Raw Mango contains ample amount of Vitamin C , so excellent source of immunity booster.  Pumpkin is really  wonderful for your health  and provides amazing health benefits. Yellow Pumpkin is low in calories and good  source of Vitamin A , C , E And K. Pumpkin is also good source of dietary fiber so helps to curb your appetite. Do try this tasty and unique  Sweet and Sour Chutney in your home.

Preparation time  –  5 minutes

Cooking time –  20 minutes

Total time – 25 minutes

Makes – 1 bowl

Ingredients  :-

  • 1 cup  yellow pumpkin  cut to thin slices
  • 1/2  cup raw mango cut to thin slices
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 small gooseberry size tamarind
  • 2 to 3 tbsp jaggery powder
  • 1/2  cup fresh grated coconut
  • 2 green chilly
  • 1 byadagi red chilly
  • 1/2  tsp mustard seeds
  • Salt to taste

For tempering

  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2  tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 red chilly
  • Few curry leaves

Method :-

Soak the tamarind in hot water after washing tamarind nicely for 30 minutes.

Then mash the tamarind and strain out the tamarind passing through a strainer.

Add one cup of water to the tamarind paste and give a nice mix once.

Transfer this to a pan and heat nicely  until it starts to boil.

Then add in pumpkin slices and raw mango slices and give a nice stir once.

Then cook this in cooker till 2 to 3 whistles, when the pressure is released , open the lid of cooker.

Strain out excess water  and mash nicely using a masher or else blend into slightly crush paste  using a electric blender.

Heat this again adding one cup water nicely once.

At this stage add jaggery and salt and heat nicely.

In the mean time crush coconut , mustard seeds , green chilly , red chilly  and turmeric powder to fine paste adding sufficient water.

Put this grinded paste to the boiling chutney and cook nicely on low flame for 5 minutes.

Heat the ghee in a small wok, put in mustard seeds and cumin seeds  , curry leaves and allow them to splutter.

Lastly add in red chilly and switch off the stove, transfer this tempering on the boiling chutney and switch off the stove.

I have served tasty Sweet and Sour Chutney with Paddu.

Tips :-

  • Quantity of jaggery and chilly may vary according to individual taste.
  • You may serve this chutney with dosa , paratha , kanji  and roti also.
  • Can store this chutney in fridge for 15 days in fridge  if you use dry coconut or copra ,
  • You can store this chutney for a week if you use fresh coconut.
  • Can use half cup coconut milk in this chutney to make it more rich.
  • 1 cup equals 250ml.
