Star Fruit Rasam

Star Fruit Rasam is a tasty , simple and quick  South Indian Cuisine  Recipe served along with hot steamed rice . This spicy and fantastic  Rasam can be consumed even by people who dislike the star fruit ,as we cannot identify star fruit in this way. So in this way we can consume this super nutritious fruit indirectly and reap the benefits  completely.

Star Fruit is also called as Carrabolla and it is yellow and green in colour. It is a sweet and sour fruit that has the shape of a five point star. The skin of the Star Fruit is edible and the flesh has a mild , sour flavor . It comes in two types a smaller green ,sour variety and larger yellow , sweeter star fruit. Star Fruit is a good source of several nutrients , especially fiber and Vitamin C. Do try this easy and healthy Rasam recipe.

Preparation time -5 minutes

Cooking time – 15 minutes

Total time – 20 minutes

Serves  – 3 to 4 persons

Ingredients :-

  • 3  star fruit big sized
  • 1 tbsp split yellow gram
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 to 3 green chilly
  • 1 tsp ghee
  • 1/4  tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4  tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 red chilly
  • Pinch of asafoetida
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 tsp coriander leaves finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 1 tsp lemon juice (opt )

Method :-

Wash the Star fruit nicely and cut into thin slices and keep aside.

Heat the water in a vessel and then add in green chilly , split yellow gram, little ghee , turmeric powder and star fruit slices and give a nice mix once . 

Then cook this in cooker until 3 whistles  and allow the pressure to release completely .

When it is completely cool down , crush to fine paste.

Then strain the paste through strainer  and transfer the liquid to a vessel .

Heat the rasam , at this stage you may add water if you want.

Add in salt and cook nicely till 2 to 3 boils.

In the mean time prepare the tempering for the rasam.

Heat the remaining ghee in a small wok and put in cumin seeds and mustard seeds allow to splutter.

Then add asafetida  , curry leaves and red chilly and give a nice mix once and switch off the stove .

Now immediately add in coriander leaves and give a good stir.

Put the tempering on the boiling Rasam.

Serve Hot and Healthy Star Fruit Rasam with hit steam Rice along with papad and ghee.

Tips :-

  • Green chilly can be increased or decreased depending on its spiciness
  • Can skip the split yellow gram in this recipe.
  • You may serve this rasam as a soup or appetizer  by reducing the green chilly.
  • Remove the seeds from the fruit before using it.
  • Use green colour star fruit as it has sour taste.
  • Increase the green chilly if you use yellow colour star fruit.
