Millet recipes are not only delicious but highly nutritious , so it is time to take a break from usual breakfast , lunch or dinner recipe and replace it with this healthy millet recipe. Today I am sharing Spinach Millets Porridge or kanji recipe which is fully filled with fiber along with calcium rich spinach and green peas and also with protein rich calcium with spices.

Preparation time – 10 minutes
Cooking time – 20 minutes
Total time – 30 minutes
Serves – 3 people
- 3/4 cup kodo millets ( arka in kannada )
- 1 tbsp Bengal gram
- 1 tbsp split green gram
- 1 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp ghee
- 1 green chilly slit
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp garlic fine chopped
- 1/4 cup onion fine chopped
- 1 small tomato fine chopped
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp coriander cumin powder
- 1/4 tsp red chilly powder
- 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
- 1/2 cup green peas blanched
- 2 tbsp sweet corn boiled
- 2tbsp curds
- 1/4 cup paneer
- 1/2 cup spinach paste
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- Salt to taste
Dry roast the millets slightly on low flame for a minute or so and wash nicely.
Then grind slightly in a mixer using pulse mode and soak the millets with five cups of water for 5 to 6 hours.
After six hours strain out the water through a strainer in a vessel and heat the same water now .
Wash the two types of grams nicely and soak for 15 minutes and keep aside.
Add in strained millets and grams to the boiling water and also add in ghee , salt little and turmeric powder , give a nice mix once.
Cook in the cooker till 4 to 5 whistles or you can cook directly on stove top.
In the mean time wash spinach nicely and crush to fine paste with out water and keep aside.
Heat the oil in a small non stick pan and allow the cumin seeds to splutter.
Add in green chilly and garlic and sauté for a minute.
Then add in fine chopped onion and sauté till transparent .
Then add in tomato and roast till tomato becomes soft.
Add in green peas , boiled corn and sauté for a minute.
Then put in spinach paste and sauté nicely.
Now combine the curds and mix nicely once, add in red chilly powder , coriander cumin seeds powder ,salt and give a nice mix and cook for two minutes adding curds.
Open the lid of the cooker then add the sauted spinach mixture to the cooked millets and boil nicely adding sufficient hot water and cook again till three to four boils.
Switch off the stove and add in grated paneer and give a nice mix.
Then drizzle lemon juice on the Spinach Millets Porridge.
Serve the Spinach Millets Porridge topped with grated paneer.
- Soak the millets at least minimum for 2 hours for proper digestion.
- You can use the millets in this recipe with out roasting also.
- Can skip the crushing step in this recipe.
- You may use any type of millets among 5 positive millets.
- 1 cup equals 100 grams.
