Spinach and Dal Curry is a very simple and healthy quick side dish which can be served with hot rice or roti. This curry is very easily prepared by anybody without much effort. This curry is made without any grinding process. Spinach and Dal Curry is very nutritious as it is packed with vitamins , proteins , calcium and fibre.
Spinach is referred as a superfood because of its highly nutritious properties . It is packed with vitamins ,minerals , folic acid ,iron ,calcium , fiber and magnesium. This Curry is combination of spinach or palak, moong dal, potato and peas spiced with green chilly. Do try this yummy and healthy Spinach and Dal Curry and reap the benefits fully and stay fit.
Preparation time – 10 minutes
Cooking time – 15 minutes
Total time – 25 minutes
Serves – 3 persons
- 3 cups – spinach leaves finely chopped
- 1/4 cup split yellow gram or split green gram
- 2 to 3 tbsp fresh green peas
- 4 to 5 green chilly slit
- 1 medium size potato
- 1 medium onion sliced
- 6 garlic pods finely chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 11/4 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
Wash the spinach nicely in the water nicely for two to three times and put on a sever and rest it for ten minutes to drain out the water completely.
Then chop the spinach to fine pieces and keep aside
Then cook the split green gram and potato as a whole in cooker for three whistles.
Allow the cooker to cool down completely, take out the peel of the potato and cut io dices.
Mash the cooked dal when the dal is warm to get a nice structure to the dal.
Heat the oil in a non stick pan and put in cumin seeds and allow them to splutter.
Immediately add in garlic pods and green chilly and sauté slightly.
Then put in sliced onion and sauté for a2 minute or until onion turn light pink.
Add in spinach and roast nicely for two to three minutes until spinach becomes soft.
At this stage add in potato pieces and blanched green peas and give a nice mix.
Lastly add in dal cooked and salt , give a nice mix and cook for two minutes.
At this stage add little water hot and adjust the consistency to get semi thick consistency to the curry.
Close the lid and cook on low flame for two to three minutes.
In the mean time prepare the tempering with oil, little cumin and a green chilly.
Top the piping hot curry with tempering and give a nice mix.
Serve the hot and healthy Spinach and Dal Curry with rice or Roti.
- You may use fresh fenugreek or methi leaves instead of spinach.
- Soak the yellow gram for at least 15 minutes before cooking to get nice mushy structure.
- Never use spinach puree to prepare this curry ,as the taste of the curry completely changes.
- Can use frozen peas instead of fresh peas.
- 1 cup = 250 ml .
