Khand Dahi Chaat is a very fantastic and nutritious Chaat prepared using some healthy vegetables that are mainly grown under the mud with brown chick peas , curds and spices . Generally this vegetables are disliked by by children. This Chaat is a good option for the children , to make them consume this vegetables in a hidden way.This Khand Dahi Chaat is the combination of North Indian and south Indian food or Chaat.
Khand means vegetables that grow under the mud and it is hindi word. Elephant foot yam has many medicinal properties according to ayurveda. It is also rich in vitamin C , A , B6 , omega 3 fatty acids and antioxidants. Sweet Potato is rich in B6, Vitamin C and A. Raw banana is is a excellent source of fiber , Vitamin C and B6. Since all these vegetables are mainly very good to boost the immunity and packed with abundance of nutrients , do try this unique and tasty Khand Dahi Chaat and reap the benefits fully. Makes – 4 to 5 servings
- 1/2 cup brown chickpeas (desi channa )
- 1 1/2 cup elephant foot yam dices ( suran )
- 1 1/2 cup raw banana dices
- 3 /4 to 1 cup sweet potato dices
- 1/2 cup fresh grated coconut
- 3 green chilly
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 3/4 cup beaten curds
- 2 tbsp pomegranate
- 1/2 cup onion chopped
- 2 tbsp coriander leaves finely chopped
- 1 to 2 lemon
- 3/4 cup small sev
- Black salt
- Chat masala powder
- Red chilly powder
- Green chilly sauce
Soak the brown chick peas for 12 hours or overnight and next day cook the chickpeas with 1 cup of water along with little salt and two pinch of cooking soda till 3 to 4 whistles in cooker.
Steam the raw banana as a whole as it is for 3 to 4 minutes , then take out the peel and cut to dices while using only.
Cut the sweet potato into dices and cook in boiling water until it becomes soft slightly.
Wash the elephant foot yam in water nicely for three to four times as this yam will coated with much mud particles when compared to other vegetables.
Then take out the peel carefully and put in the water until you use it, cut to dices and again put in water.
Heat two glass of water in the cooker ,add in one tsp of tamarind paste , quarter tsp of turmeric powder and a nice mix once.
Then put in diced elephant foot yam and cook till one to two whistles till slightly soft.
Allow the cooker to cool down and strain out the water from elephant foot yam and sweet potato very well.
Then fry suran , sweet potato , raw banana one by one in the hot oil on medium flame until light brown and keep aside.
Crush fresh coconut , green chilly , salt , turmeric powder and cumin seeds to coarse paste with out water and keep aside.
Combine beaten thick curds , salt , cumin powder, black salt and sugar powder (opt) as per you taste and mix nicely.
Take a wide container and transfer all the fried khand , boiled chick peas to this container and give a nice mix once.
Then keep aside sufficient crushed masala as per your taste .
Take the serving bowl and put this mix till 3/4 portion of the cup and drizzle the lemon juice on it.
Then top it with 1 to 2 tsp of curds , continue with chopped onion , pomegranate , green chilly sauce.
Sprinkle chatmasala and red chilly powder and lastly top it with sev and coriander leaves,
Serve yummy and healthy Khand Dahi Chaat .
- Apply oil to the hands nicely while cutting elephant foot yam because it causes itching sometimes.
- While boiling the yam add 1 tbsp tamarind paste or ½ lemon juice or 1 tsp vinegar because yam has the property of irritating the throat.
- Elephant foot yam has crystals of calcium oxalate which dissolves in vinegar and there will be no itching in throat.
- You may include the potatoes in this recipe.
- Serve this chaat in small portions as it is heavy.
- You may use green chilly paste diluted in water instead of green chilly paste.
