Jack fruit Payasam

Jack fruit Payasam is a traditional  and  unique payasam recipe  that is commonly prepared  in Kerala. This Jack fruit Payasam tastes very delicious and yummy filled  with flavor of jack fruit . Here I have showed each and every step to prepare Jack fruit payasam in very easy way.

I have prepared this  Jack fruit Payasam  in healthier version by using jaggery  to prepare this Payasam . Jack fruit has very content of fibers and so this Payasam is very healthy  to improve the digestion. Jack fruit has very high amount of potassium which helps to reduce  and controls the blood pressure levels in the body.

Preparation time  – 10 minutes

Cooking time  –  15 minutes

Total time  –  25 minutes

Serves  –   3 to 4 people

Ingredients :-

  • 1 cup jack fruit finely chopped
  • 1/2  cup water (1/4 + 1/4  )
  • 1 tbsp  split yellow gram ( hesarubele )
  • 3/4  cup jaggery
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2  tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tbsp cashewnut pieces
  • 2 tbsp fresh coconut paste
  • 1/2  tsp ghee
  • 1/2  cup  milk

Method :-

Take out the seeds from the jack fruit and wash the fruit  nicely in water and soak in salt water for 5 minutes and wash nicely.

Then chop the jack fruit to fine pieces and cooker in cooker with quarter cup of water till 3 whistles.

Dry roast the yellow gram slightly in a kadai and cook in cooker adding 2 to 3 tbsp of water till soft paste or till 3 whistles.

Grind the fresh coconut to fine paste adding little water and keep aside.

Crush the jack fruit cooked to paste  and keep aside.

Heat the jaggery with quarter cup of water nicely and strain the liquid to take out all the dust particles.

Put this liquid in a non stick pan and heat slightly and add the  jack fruit paste and roast nicely for 1 to 2 minutes.

Add salt and quarter cup of water and cook till one boil.

Then put in dal cooked and mashed to the boiling payasam and give a nice mix.

Add in coconut paste , cardamom powder and milk and cook nicely till 2 to 3 boils.

Lastly put in fried nuts along with ghee and give a nice mix.

Tips :-

  • Add the jaggery to the sweet dish as per sweetness present in the jack fruit.
  • You may use thick coconut milk instead of coconut paste.
  • You may add 1 tbsp of finely chopped jackfruit pieces roasted in ghee to the payasam.
  • You may use jack fruit with lesser amount of sweetness also for preparing this payasam.
