Mupu Eats brings to you Karnataka special very healthy, tasty and easy Dill Leaves Sambar . Dill Leaves Sambar is a unique sambar recipe prepared in North Karnataka. This Dill Leaves sambar is considered to be very healthy as it is filled with dill leaves , which has many medicinal properties.
Dill Leaves sambar is easily prepared with very simple ingredients using dill leaves , brown chickpea , green gram, toordal spiced with rasam powder. This Dill Leaves Sambar is fulled packed with nutrients as dill leaves is a good source of Vitamin c which boosts the immune system. Brown chickpea and green gram provides high content of proteins that helps in the overall development of the body.

Preparation time – 5 minutes
Cooking time – 15 minutes
Total time 20 minutes
Serves – 3 to 4 members
- 1 to 3/4 cup dill leaves finely chopped (sabbsega soppu )
- 1 tbsp green gram ( hesarakalu)
- 2 tbsp brown chickpea ( kadalekalu)
- 2 tbsp toordal ( thogare bele )
- 2 tbso or half onion
- 2 tbsp tomato chopped
- 1/4 cup grated coconut
- 2 to 1 1/2 tsp rasam powder
- 1/4 tsp rice
- 1/2 tsp roasted coriander seeds
- 1/2 tsp tamarind paste
- ½ tsp jaggery
- Salt to taste
- 1 tsp oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
- Pinch of hing
- 1 guntur red chilly
- Few curry leaves
Wash the green gram and brown chickpeas in water and soak in water 12 hours before using.
Wash toor dal in water and soak it 1/2 hour before using.
Dry roast the rice in small wok till light brown.
Heat 1/2 tsp of oil in small wok and roast the onion and tomato slightly, switch off the stove and put in fresh coconut and give a nice mix ,allow to cool down.
Cook the green gram, brown chick peas, toordal and dill leaves with with 2 1/2 cups of water , liitle salt, turmeric powder in cooker till soft or till 4 to 5 whistles. ( you may add little soda while cooking dal and gram to avoid hardness in the grams.}
In the mean time crush the roasted onion, tomato, coconut,rasam powder, roasted rice, roasted coriander seeds with water to fine paste.
Then combine the grinded paste with cooked greens, dal and grams nicely and heat the sambar on medium flame.
When the sambar starts to boil ,add salt , tamarind paste and jaggery and give a nice mix.
In this stage add the hot water to the sambar as per your wish and allow the sambar to boil nicely till 3 to 4 boils.
In the meah time prepare the tempering for the Dill Leaves Sambar.
Heat 1/2 tsp oil in small wok and put in cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing and curry leaves..
When mustard seeds and cumin seeds starts to splutter add red chilly and give quick mix and switch off the stove.
Pour the tempering on the hot and yummy Dill Leaves Sambar.
Serve the healthy Dill leaves Sambar with hot steamed rice along with ghee.
- You may skip onion in this recipe.
- You may avoid green gram and can rise the quantity of brown chickpeas.
- This Dill leaves Sambar goes awesome with ragi ball and chapathi.
- You may use sprouted brown chickpeas and sprouted green gram to make more healthier.
