Dal  Free  Khichadi

This Dal free Khichadi recipe is a very  simple and easy to prepare within 30 minutes. It is healthy, nutritious and very light on the tummy as it is dal free. Serve as a breakfast or lunch or dinner.  It is the best comfort food when we are sick. This is one of the healthiest recipes in our Indian cuisine.

There is no one method to  make the khichadi . In fact there are several variations  across the country. Today I have shared a unique and yummy and very different Khichadi recipe  with out using any dal.  No onion and no garlic Dal free Khichadi  can be offered to the God  as a offering   during this Festive month of Shravana. Friends do try this unique and mouthwatering Dal free Khichadi  and share this recipe with  your friends and realatives.

Cooking time  – 20 minutes

Total time  –  30 minutes

Serves  – 2 to 3 persons

Ingredients :-

  • 1 cup sona masoori rice
  • 1/3 rd cup rawa or sooji  ( upma )
  • 3 to 4 green chilly finely chopped
  • 1 tsp ginger finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp  turmeric powder
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 cinnamon piece
  • 1 clove
  • 1 piece of  pineapple flower
  • 2 tsp ghee or oil
  • 1 potato
  • 1 green capsicum
  • 1 yellow capsicum
  • 6 to 8 beans
  • 1 chow chow
  • 1 tomato
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tsp red chilly powder
  • 1 tsp  vangibath  powder
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 tsp  cumin seeds  (1/2 +1/2 )
  • 1/4  tsp mustard seeds
  • Few curry leaves
  • 2 tsp coriander leaves finely chopped

Method :-

Wash the vegetables nicely in  clean water  and chop them to fine pieces .

Wash the rice for two to three times  and soak it for 30 minutes.

Heat  one tsp  of ghee  in the cooker and put in bay leaf , whole garam masala  and give a nice mix once.

Add in half tsp of  cumin seeds and allow to splutter , then add in green chilly and ginger and sauté for a minute.

Then add in sooji and roast for a minute on low flame and immediately add all chopped vegetables and give a quick mix once.

Put in all masala powder ,salt  and turmeric powder and sauté nicely .

Now  add in rice and  saute  for two minutes on low flame.

Then  pour 3 cups of hot water and give a nice mix once  , close the lid of the cooker  and cook for two to three whistles .

Allow the cooker to release the pressure completely  , then open the  lid and add in boiling water  as much  you want to get the right consistency for the khichadi .

Cook  on low closing the lid for three to four minutes.

In the mean time , prepare the tempering  for the khichadi .

Heat the left over ghee in a wok , prepare the tempering with mustard seeds , cumin seeds and curry leaves , switch off the stove and add the chopped coriander leaves and give a nice mix once.

Serve  yummy and tasty  Dal free Khichadi topped with tempering .

Tips :-

  • You may replace  upma  rawa with bansi rawa.
  • Always roast the rawa on low flame till you get nice aroma and then use for khichadi.
  • Can use millets instead of rice to prepare khichadi.
  • 1 cup equals  125 ml.
