Broken Wheat Banana Payasam

Broken Wheat Banana Payasam  is a sweet dish or dessert prepared  commonly in Karnataka  during festivals . This Broken wheat Payasam is very simple , easy and healthy recipe that can be prepared even by bachelors . Broken Wheat Banana Payasam is a combination of fiber , iron , vitamins , minerals and proteins.

Broken Wheat is made from crushing whole wheat . The nutrition and fiber is intact and hence very healthy. Broken Wheat is a good source of iron and magnesium that  has higher glycemic index and nutritional value than that of rice. This Broken Wheat banana can be considered  as very nutritious as it is packed with fiber rich wheat, protein rich gram dal and iron rich and energy booster Banana, even though it is prepared with sugar.

Preparation time –  10 minutes

Cooking time  –  20 minutes

Total time  –  30 minutes

Serves  –  3 to 4 people

Ingredients :-

  • 1/2  cup  Broken wheat  ( daliya  )
  • 1/2  cup gram dal
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2  cup fresh grated coconut
  • 1/2  cup banana finely chopped
  • 1/2  tsp ghee
  • 1/2  tsp  cardamom powder
  • 1/2  to 1 cup milk
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tsp cashewnuts
  • 1 tsp raisins

Method :-

Heat the ghee in small kadai anf dry the cashewnuts till light brown and add the raisins and mix once and take out the nuts and raisins and keep aside.

In the same kadai add the daliya and roast slightly on low flame and take out on a plate.

In the same Kadai put in gram dal and  roast slightly.

Then soak  daliya and gram dal in water for one hour and then strain out the water and use the same water for cooking.

Heat the water in a vessel till one boil , then add in roasted broken wheat  and  gramdal  to the water and place the vessel in cooker and cook till 5 to 6 whistles.

Allow to cool down and then transfer the cooked dal and daliya to a wide vessel and add in sugar and cook till sugar melts nicely.

Add in fresh grated coconut, fried nuts , raisins and milk to the boiling payasam

Heat the payasam nicely till 2 to 3 boils and switch off the stove and allow to cool down slightly , then add in banana and give a nice mix once. Serve the Broken Wheat banana Payasam  topped with nuts and raisins.

Tips :-

  • You may replace half cup jaggery with sugar.
  • Do not use milk in payasam if you using jaggery.
  • Use the small daliya to prepare the payasam.
  • Grind the big daliya to fine daliya once in the mixer and then use in payasam if the small daliya is not available.
  • You may serve this payasam as a dessert if you chill  topped with nuts and honey or chocolate syrup drizzled .
  • Use ripen banana here for the best results.
