Banana Stem Jowar Soup

Banana stem Jowar Soup is unique, awesome, easy , tasty and healthy  soup or like a full meal Soup  for the people those who are on weight loss plan. Banana stem being rich in fiber , keeps us full for longer hours. This Banana Stem Jowar Soup is excellent for Diabetic Patients  especially consumed with out straining along with fiber.  Banana Stem has very low glycemic  index which is an important factor for diabetic patient to maintain the sugar levels in the body. This Soup is enhanced with gluten free jowar flour and  rich in protein  , which is very beneficial for the Diabetic patients. Banana Stem Jowar Soup is good for others also as it contains potassium rich and vitamin B6 rich banana stem and protein filled jowar flour.

This soup is the combination of banana stem and jowar flour , flavor from garlic , cumin seeds and pepper gives distinct taste to the soup., to name it as South Indian style Soup. Many don’t  include banana stem  in their diet due to its complicated  cleaning  and cutting.  But while making Soup that part will get reduced. I have used jowar flour and enhance the taste to make Soup protein rich one along  with fiber rich.

Preparation time  –   10 minutes

Cooking time   –  15 minutes

Total time  –  25 minutes

Serves  – 3 to 4 persons

Ingredients :-

  • 1 1/2  cup  banana stem finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp  jowar  flour
  • 1/2 tsp ghee
  • 1/2  tsp garlic coarsely crushed  or finely chopped
  • 1/2  tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2  tsp  pepper powder
  • 1/2 tsp green chilly finely chopped
  • 1/4  tsp turmeric powder
  • 2 tbsp  coriander leaves finely chopped
  • Salt to taste
  • 4 to 5 cups  water
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice

Method :-

Remove the outer peel  of the banana stem , wash nicely.

The  fibrous inner core of the stalk is eaten after peeling off the outer layer of the stem.

Then chop the banana stem to very fine pieces.

Take out the fiber around the stem as far as possible while chopping.

Then soak the chopped banana stem pieces immediately  at the time of chopping only in very thin butter milk.

Fine  chop or coarsely crush the green chilly and garlic to coarse paste just by using pulse mode in the mixer.

Dry roast the jowar flour on low flame  until there is slight change in the colour.

Heat the ghee in a non stick pan and add in garlic and green chilly and sauté for 30 seconds.

Then  strain out the chopped banana stem from the butter milk and transfer to the hot pan.

Sauté nicely for 2  minutes on low flame and add in quarter cup of water and cook on low flame until stem becomes soft.

Mix in jowar flour and quarter cup of water nicely with out lumps and keep aside.

When the stem becomes soft , add in jowar flour paste and mix constantly for a minute.

Then add the water gradually mixing simultaneously  and allow the soup to boil nicely.

Now add in turmeric powder , cumin powder , pepper powder and salt as per your taste.

Then blend the soup slightly using a blender , this is totally optional else you can do without blending also.

Heat the soup nicely till three to four boils.

Lastly add in coriander leaves and lemon juice and give nice mix and switch off the  flame.

Serve the piping hot and healthy Banana Stem Jowar Soup garnished with coriander leaves.

Tips :-

  • Chopped banana stem turns brown if you keep as it as or if you soak in plain water.
  • Soak the banana stem chopped in thin butter milk immediately to avoid the change in colour.
  • Clean the banana stem properly and then cut into pieces.
  • You may store the chopped banana stem pieces in fridge soaking in thin butter milk.
  • You can store the whole banana stem with out chopping as it is in fridge  or outside for two to three days.
  • The  butter milk should  be changed after two three days before it turns sour.
  • You may use ragi flour instead of jowar flour.
